FOLLOWING a successful drive last year, Gaven MP Alex Douglas has launched the 2011 'Wrapped from the Heart' Christmas appeal for local needy families.
Dr Douglas has linked with the Nerang Neighbourhood Centre Foodbank which continues to experience a high demand in weekly food hampers as
residents face difficult times.
"I named it Wrapped from the Heart because there are many generous people in my electorate who do so much from their heart for the homeless and needy in the community. We are always heartened by their support and know they will get behind the appeal again this year," said Dr Douglas.
"It also reminds me of that well-known saying 'He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.' Let's get behind this appeal and bring joy to those less well-off in the community."
Nerang Neighbourhood Centre Foodbank Coordinator Dianne Munro said she was overwhelmed by the support received from the Wrapped from the Heart appeal last year.
"We had such a wonderful response to our calls for support and we really do appreciate those who will give again to the appeal in 2011."
Dr Douglas has urged residents to bring Christmas gifts of non-perishable food, toiletries such as shampoo and soap, toys, games and other gifts for families to his office. These gifts will be distributed with food hampers from the Foodbank.
He said: "With the high unemployment and everyday expenses going up, people are really struggling to celebrate Christmas, particularly those with young families.
"I'm challenging residents in the community, work-places and community groups to get behind this appeal and show what a heart they have for those less fortunate."
Gifts should be left at Dr Douglas's office at 4/12 Ferry Street, Nerang, by Friday, December 16 for distribution to the community.
